ACEP hosted a multidisciplinary group of health care providers who perform unscheduled sedation to create a set of consensus guidelines that benefits our patients. As all emergency physicians know, there are often restrictions placed on the ability of emergency physicians and nurses to provide the best care. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services permits institutions to use specialty guidelines when constructing their own guidelines. However, to date, many guidelines have tried to encompass all sedation. The consensus guidelines will be published in the future in the Annals of Emergency Medicine after other organizations endorse this work. The group welcomes input from other groups with an interest in these guidelines. Interested societies should contact ACEP at sschneider@acep.org, and they will be sent a draft of the guidelines document to comment on.
