Emergency Diagnosis and Triage for Large Vessel Occlusion Stroke Treatment

Acquire acute ischemic stroke clinical education through the use of simulation. The session will walk the participant through a “code stroke” from emergency medical services field response to ED neuro assessment, neurological imaging, and interventional treatment. Two full-body patient simulators and an imaging station will allow participants to have a true emergency experience for acute ischemic stroke. The simulation stations will be staffed by Medtronic personnel and physician consultants.

Designing for Highly Infectious Diseases in the ED

Emerging highly infectious diseases have shaken the world in the last several years. We will inevitably face more. Emergency departments are the hospital’s frontline defense for highly infectious diseases. Proper equipment, procedures, and protocols are essential, but there also are key elements of facility design that can lead to successful outcomes. This presentation will review infection transmission in the hospital and innovative approaches and design features to make the ED more effective operationally and safer for the staff. At the end of the 10-minute session, the participant will understand the significance of aerosol versus fomite versus droplet transmission in the built environment, understand the role of decontamination principles in infectious disease, and understand concepts of facility design that can support unidirectional flow and decontamination.
