“We use the DECAF score to help select low-risk patients (DECAF 0-1) who can be safely sent home either without additional support or within our Hospital at Home service (those who would otherwise require admission due to treatment requirements, such as temporary controlled oxygen or nebulized therapy),” Dr. Bourke, who was not involved in the new work, told Reuters Health by email.
“Our published randomized controlled trial of Hospital at Home selected by DECAF showed that this model is safe (no increase in mortality), clinically effective (no increase in readmissions), associated with a reduction in mean total health and social care costs over 90 days, and preferred by 90 percent of patients,” he said.
