In January, Marie-Carmelle Elie, MD, became the first Black woman to be named professor and chair of an academic emergency medicine department at a major American medical school. She will assume her new position at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in June.

ACEP Now: Vol 40 – No 03 – March 2021Dr. Elie received her MD at the State University of New York in Brooklyn and completed her emergency medicine residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York and a critical care/trauma fellowship at the R. Adam Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland.
Currently, Dr. Elie is associate professor in the division of critical care, department of emergency medicine and the division of palliative care, department of medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville.
