International Emergency Medicine

In response to the turbulent political environment, ACEP members are supporting NEMPAC, ACEP’s Political Action Committee, at record levels to ensure that emergency medicine has a strong voice in Washington, D.C.

NEMPAC members work hard to make the nation’s leaders aware of the issues that matter to emergency physicians and their patients, and as a result, NEMPAC is poised to make an impact on the congressional elections in 2012.

During the ACEP Council meeting, NEMPAC collected $160,854 and received an additional pledge of $100,000 from CEP America’s physicians.

Coupled with the $675,000 donated to date in 2011 from more than 5,000 ACEP members across the country, NEMPAC is well on its way to reaching $1.15 million for 2011.

With control of the House and Senate up for grabs next November, it is important for emergency physicians to join forces to influence which legislators deserve to return to Congress and which new candidates will best represent the interests of emergency medicine and patients once elected.

Implementation of the new health care law continues to present challenges to the specialty, and decisions by the Supreme Court next year – along with the fall elections – may have a major impact on whether the law is repealed, changed, or replaced. It is more important than ever for emergency physicians to stay active and engaged in the process.

NEMPAC is currently the fourth largest physician specialty political action committee – behind anesthesiologists, orthopedic surgeons, and radiologists – with a goal of becoming No. 1. If every ACEP member donated just $100 to NEMPAC, this goal would be reached by year end.
