Mark T. Steele, M.D., an ACEP member since 1985, has assumed the office of President of the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM).

ACEP News: Vol 29 – No 09 – September 2010Dr. Steele, of Olathe, Kan., has been a member of the ABEM Board of Directors since July 2003 and was elected to the Executive Finance Committee in 2007. He has served ABEM in many capacities since 1988, including as an oral examiner, item writer, and senior oral board reviewer. He chairs the Test Administration Committee and has chaired the Board’s Nominating Committee.
Dr. Steele also is an ABEM representative to the American Board of Medical Specialties.
Dr. Steele received his medical degree from the University of Missouri–Kansas City (UMKC) in 1980, and completed his emergency medicine residency in 1983 at Truman Medical Centers (TMC), also in Kansas City, Mo. His interests include wound care, infectious disease, circadian rhythms and shift work, and emergency medicine practice issues. He has authored or contributed to more than 50 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters.
Dr. Steele is a professor of Emergency Medicine at the UMKC School of Medicine. He serves as Chief Medical Officer for TMC, as UMKC Associate Dean for TMC Programs, and as Executive Medical Director for University Physician Associates.
At its July 2010 meeting, ABEM also elected these directors to its 2010-2011 Executive Finance Committee: Dr. Debra G. Perina, Dr. Richard N. Nelson, Dr. John C. Moorhead, Dr. James H. Jones, and Dr. J. Mark Meredith.
