Secret weapons (medical)
Norman Residency is in a community-based hospital where we have the benefit of being the only residency program. This gives our residents the ability to do all the procedures and obtain tremendous experience. We also have extraordinary EMS opportunities. Our program director, Patrick Cody, DO, is also director of our hospital-based EMS. Our residents train in SWAT and learn to drive emergency response vehicles, and we host a statewide yearly EMS symposium. Additionally, our residents regularly exercise mass gathering training, serving as the game-day physicians in the stadium clinic at the University of Oklahoma football games.
Starting in their second years, residents have the opporatunity to moonlight in smaller emergency departments in underserved areas of our state.
A few other important traits of our program include our new ultrasound fellowship, our friendly ECG competition, and an emphasis on wellness with a yearly retreat to rejuvenate, reflect, and bond.
Secret weapons (nonmedical)
Norman is a happening college town and hosts NCAA college sports. Our state is known for beautiful parks with biking, boating, and hiking. We have more man-made lakes than any other state. Nearby, Oklahoma City is known for downtown Riversport Adventures including whitewater rafting, the Bricktown entertainment district, outstanding theater, NBA basketball (OKC Thunder), and many large casinos.

Trivia
Oklahoma averages 54 tornadoes a year. The famous 1996 film Twister was filmed across our state, including scenes in an auto body shop here in Norman.

Dan Magdziarz, DOThis is an excellent program – I’ve encountered a number of Norman Regional Emergency Medicine residents – They are well trained, enthusiastic, and very well-rounded clinicians. I highly recommend this program!
