Interactive exhibits were broken into five zones: pre-hospital, patient access, patient treatment, innovation, and communication. Industry experts delivered 10-minute ED Talks on hot topics in emergency medicine.

At almost twice the size of the debut exhibit and redesigned with fully equipped trauma bays, visitors experienced even more technology and breakthrough treatment options. Also featured were the first scripted live scenarios that integrated technologies from several innovatED presenters, allowing attendees to see the tech in action in ways ordinary product demonstrations couldn’t. The Critical Care section presented “Code Blue: The Undifferentiated Crashing Patient” and the Disaster Medicine section members performed in “Code Black,” where emergency physicians treated multiple victims in the emergency department as a response to an oil refinery explosion.

Back by popular demand, the codes were expanded and featured the expertise of more ACEP sections including EMS, Tactical, and Ultrasound. Code Black kicked off with short video segments of an active shooter incident and set the stage for the action to take place in the innovatED trauma bay, where a team emergency physicians treated multiple victims with gunshot wounds. Code Blue utilized the latest technologies to diagnose and treat a septic patient.

incubatED was added this year, giving attendees a sneak peek of not-yet-released EM products from start-up companies. For its last edition, the Code Black team partnered with three more sections—Event Medicine, Pediatric, and Sports Medicine—to offer the audience two different experiences: a simulated response to an earthquake disaster and non-scripted immersive simulations to mass casualty active shooter incidents An area dedicated to palliative care was added this year. The mHealth Toolbox interactive workshop also debuted, allowing participants to test top med tech innovations from around the world and brainstorm novel applications for each through real-world case scenarios.

Areas dedicated to virtual reality and mental health were added this year, and the palliative area was expanded to include geriatric care. An idea lounge and innovation spotlight were added to give technology innovators and “pit docs” a chance to present ideas and brainstorm real-world products and services. A new Shark Tank–style pitch event showcased (and funded) some of the best start-up companies emerging in health care.
Emergency physicians are known for their innovative approaches to patient care and technology. In 2013, ACEP created a dedicated space at its annual meeting to celebrate this innovative spirit by showcasing the most cutting-edge innovations in the field. From its debut at ACEP13, innovatED has grown each year to include more interactive exhibits, ED Talks, and live emergency exhibitions.
