MCEP has been proactive and assertive in approaching the state about any proposed changes. This relationship with the state bore fruit a few years ago when a wave of poor public policy rippled across this country, seeking to lock Medicaid patients out of the ED or refuse payment to emergency physicians and hospitals if patients obtained care in the ED. MCEP’s history of collegial work with the state was recognized when it was invited to participate in early stakeholder discussions rather than having policies instituted without emergency physician input.
Michigan emergency physicians received a payment increase from Medicaid as of Jan. 1, 2016. Thanks to efforts of many leaders of the Michigan College, its continuous work on behalf of patients and emergency physicians, and its collaboration with the state, both reimbursement tiers saw increases this year.
Policymakers in Michigan know that emergency physicians step into the breach when newly insured patients cannot access the system any other way. They know that we provide safe, efficient, and cost-effective care. At a time when some emergency physicians are fighting to prevent cuts in Medicaid rates, MCEP secured a net gain of $10,000 per member per year! Just one year’s increase will cover members’ chapter and national dues for a decade. This is what happens when emergency physicians work collaboratively with their state.
