Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) originates from blunt injury to the head and include patients with concussion (www.cdc.gov/TraumaticBrainInjury/). In current practice, physicians can rely on several different clinical decision tools to differentiate mTBI from moderate or severe TBI. To minimize the use of advanced imaging in patients with blunt head injury, physicians can apply the National Emergency X-Radiography Utilization Study (NEXUS) Head CT decision tool (NEXUS Head CT), the New Orleans Criteria (NOC), and the Canadian CT Head Rule for adults, or the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) rules in children. However, in some patient populations, especially those on anticoagulation, those decision tools are not applicable. This mTBI resource center, curated by ACEP Now Medical Editor in Chief Cedric Dark, MD, MPH, FACEP, provides a listing of recent, informative articles on injuries which may result in mTBI.
