The 2010 American College of Emergency Physicians Awards program, which honors leadership and excellence, provides an opportunity to recognize members for their significant professional contributions, as well as service to the College.

All ACEP members are eligible to participate in one or more of the College’s award programs.
John G. Wiegenstein Leadership Award
Presented to a current or past national leader in recognition of outstanding contribution to the College. The award honors John G. Wiegenstein, M.D., a founding member and the first president of ACEP.
E. Jackson Allison Jr., M.D., FACEP
Dr. Allison is professor of emergency medical care in the College of Health and Human Sciences at Western Carolina University. Although he is retired from active clinical practice, his passion for improving public health keeps him involved in initiatives worldwide, including recent efforts to help earthquake victims in Haiti.
Throughout his career, he has held dozens of leadership positions in emergency medicine. He has served as president of the American College of Emergency Physicians; one of four founding presidents and first presiding president of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine; chair of the Emergency Medicine Foundation; founding president of the Association of Academic Chairs of Emergency Medicine; and chair of the Residency Review Committee for Emergency Medicine.
James D. Mills Outstanding Contribution to Emergency Medicine Award
Presented to an active, life, or honorary member for significant contributions to emergency medicine. The award honors the late James D. Mills Jr., M.D., the second president of the College.
Charles F. Pattavina, M.D., FACEP
Dr. Pattavina is medical director and chief of the Department of Emergency Medicine at St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor, Maine, where he is spearheading initiatives to modernize emergency services and recruit new physicians.
He moved to Maine in 2008 after more than two decades at Brown University, where he helped lay the foundation for the University’s
Department of Emergency Medicine, and The Miriam Hospital in Providence, R.I., where he directed the emergency department. During his tenure in Providence, he taught hundreds of residents and medical students, and led efforts to expand Brown’s emergency medicine residency to include The Miriam Hospital.
Outstanding Contribution in Education Award
Presented to a member who has made a significant contribution to the educational aspects of emergency medicine.
Alfred D. Sacchetti, M.D., FACEP
Dr. Sacchetti is chief of emergency services at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Camden, N.J., and assistant clinical professor of emergency medicine at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.
A dedicated educator and researcher, he is a contributing author of more than 100 journal publications, medical monographs, and textbook chapters, and he has delivered more than 450 national and international lectures. His research interests include pediatric emergency medicine, emergency cardiology, and procedural sedation.
Outstanding Contribution in Research Award
Presented to a member who has made a significant contribution to research in emergency medicine.
Roger J. Lewis, M.D., Ph.D., FACEP
Dr. Lewis is a professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and the vice chair for academic affairs in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Harbor–UCLA Medical Center.
He is the author or co-author of more then 180 original research publications, reviews, editorials, and chapters, and in 2009 was selected as a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies. A recognized expert in clinical research methodology, statistical analysis, and informed consent, Dr. Lewis participates in the design and analysis of numerous laboratory, clinical, and health services research studies.
Outstanding Contribution in EMS Award
Presented to a member or non-member who has made a contribution to emergency medical services that is nationally significant in application or scope.
Marvin A. Wayne, M.D., FACEP
Dr. Wayne is medical director for Whatcom Medic One, the emergency medical services system for Bellingham and Whatcom counties in Washington. He is also an attending physician in the emergency department at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center and an associate clinical professor at the University of Washington.
He has been the driving force in creating what is now considered one of the highest quality, most innovative, and most respected EMS systems in the world. Since 1974, he has worked effectively with influential community leaders, medical professionals, and elected officials to turn a vision of state-of-the-art out-of-hospital care into a reality.
Colin C. Rorrie Jr. Award for Excellence in Health Policy
Presented to a member or non-member who has made an outstanding contribution in monitoring and influencing health policy of importance to emergency medicine.
R. Myles Riner, M.D., FACEP
After nearly four decades in clinical practice, Dr. Riner currently serves as a consultant to CEP America, the nation’s third largest provider of physician staffing and comprehensive management services. Recognized as an expert in the complex arena of physician reimbursement, he has been a leading advocate for public policy changes to ensure fair payment of emergency physicians by government and private payers.
John A. Rupke Legacy Award
Presented to a current ACEP member for outstanding lifetime contributions to the College. The award honors John A. Rupke, M.D., one of the College’s founding members.
Pamela B. Bensen, M.D., M.S., FACEP
Dr. Bensen is president and chief executive of Medical Education Programs Inc., a consulting firm specializing in physician education for medical documentation, documentation and coding audits for CPT, and DRG coding.
Dr. Benson was one of emergency medicine’s first interns and designed her own internship program. She has practiced emergency medicine since 1971 and has provided clinical, administrative, and practice management leadership to hospitals in Maine and South Carolina. She has been a member of the ACEP Council since 1973 and served on ACEP’s Board of Directors in 1982-1988. Because she, the specialty, and the College grew up together, she has shaped programs and solved problems organically as opportunities and necessity dictated.
Council Meritorious Service Award
Presented to a member who has made consistent contributions to the growth and effectiveness of the ACEP Council.
David Wilcox, M.D., FACEP
After 30 years in academic and clinical emergency medicine, Dr. Wilcox currently serves as an independent consultant helping managed care and pharmaceutical companies identify treatments that deliver high efficacy at a reasonable cost.
His dedication to the ACEP Council and his generosity in mentoring new councillors has made him an invaluable resource. He has served on numerous Council committees and, in 1995, launched the ACEP Council EMF Challenge, an annual fundraising initiative that continues to benefit the Emergency Medicine Foundation.
Honorary Membership Award
Presented to an individual who has rendered outstanding service to the College or to the medical profession.
Diane K. Bollman
Ms. Bollman is executive director of the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians (MCEP), a position she has held for more than 17 years.
During her tenure as executive director, MCEP has nearly doubled its membership, completed a successful building campaign, and relocated its headquarters to a new building in Lansing. In addition, with the involvement of an active board, committees, and volunteers, MCEP has been successful in important legislative and reimbursement initiatives, including the passage of prudent layperson legislation, enhanced EMS laws, and a two-tiered Medicaid reimbursement structure.
Honorary Membership Award
Presented to an individual who has rendered outstanding service to the College or to the medical profession.
Janet Goldberg
Ms. Goldberg is a dedicated volunteer committed to strengthening her community and the specialty of emergency medicine.
Since 1993, Jan has worked with her husband, Dr. Richard M. Goldberg, and other volunteers to establish and operate the ACEP Wellness Booth. Each year at Scientific Assembly, the booth provides a range of health-related services, including flu shots, blood chemistries, body fat analyses, and burnout surveys.
