The resuscitation survey, published in November 2008, showed that 9 out of 10 respondents (88%) consider bystander intervention important to increase survival. Other factors viewed as having a positive impact on survival rates include faster patient-to-doctor time (77%), data collection and sharing (73%), automated technologies (66%), and real-time feedback on compressions (65%).
The survey suggests that more than half of the emergency physicians surveyed believe the length of time between patient collapse and first responder arrival is important in determining the success of resuscitation efforts. The survey also indicates that an overwhelming majority (89%) of emergency physicians feel that technology will play an increasingly important role in resuscitation over the next 5 years. Eighty-four percent note that emerging technologies/therapies are important in treating sudden cardiac arrest.
“New ZOLL technology, Real CPR Help, allows the rescuer to achieve the correct rate and depth of chest compressions during CPR. The real-time feedback provided helps rescuers maintain good CPR even over long durations when fatigue might normally set in,” said Ward Hamilton, Senior Vice President of ZOLL. “We’re pleased to offer the ACEP member discount and encourage AED use and improved CPR for local schools and community centers to help increase access to AEDs and improve treatment.”
Only 1 in 4 survey respondents consider automated chest compression devices important, despite research that indicates their positive impact. Approximately 3 out of 10 respondents say CPR feedback devices would have the greatest impact on improving the quality of CPR. The online survey was commissioned by ACEP, and ZOLL Medical Corporation sponsored it. A total of 1,056 questionnaires were completed by ACEP members in selected membership sections.
